5 Important Thing You Should Know About Blue Light. 1. What is blue light? → Without getting too scientific, light is composed of electromagnetic particles moving in waves. The waves are represented by different colors. Wavelengths are grouped into different categories including X-rays, infrared light, visible light, and UV rays. When combined all of these comprise the electromagnetic spectrum. Human eyes have sensitivity to one part of this spectrum, the part which is seen as colors or also known as visible light. Blue light produces energy that is higher than some of the other sources. Over time, medical professionals believe this could cause long term damage to your eyes. 2. Sources of blue light → One of the main ways we are exposed to blue light is through natural sunlight. There are many other artificial sources of blue light that we use on a daily basis. These sources can include: cellphone/tablet screens, digital devices, laptop and desktop computers, and video games just to name a few. The amount of blue light you are exposed to depends on how many of these devices you use and how often you use them. For most of us, this is probably far too much. Energy efficient technology increases your exposure to this blue light as well. Many stores and offices around the world (also some homes) use energy saving fluorescent light bulbs or LED lights. This can be contributing to the problem of blue light in your near vicinity. 3. More studies should be done to determine “how much blue light is too much blue light”. Most eye care professionals worry that in addition to natural outdoor exposure, added modern exposure from digital devices may increase your risk for over exposure to blue light and potential eye problems. Additionally, it is possible that blue light exposure may increase digital eye strain and macular degeneration risks. 4. How to protect yourself and your eyes from blue light → For those of us who are constantly texting, emailing, or browsing through the internet (whether it’s on a phone screen or other digital screen) a great way to reduce exposure to blue light is by using a blue light filter. Many lenses can be ordered through your local eyeglass retailer which have an anti-reflective coating which can also be glare reducing and block some blue light. Photochromic lenses are another way to help protect your eyes, in which the lenses darken outdoors and lighten indoors. Blue blocker lenses are quickly gaining popularity. The polymer absorbs the blue light keeping much of it from passing through the lenses to your eyes. Specially tinted “yellow hue” computer glasses are also another leader in the field for protecting against blue light. Some wearers find the yellow tint to be inconvenient due to your surroundings having a yellow appearance, but most users don’t mind in exchange for the protection the lenses offer against blue light.
If you have questions about blue light feel free to contact our eyewear and eye care professionals at OPTX Rhode Island. We are available to help you explore options to protect your eyes from blue light with many lens options for your prescription or non-prescription glasses. We can be reached at 401-521-6789 or stop in at our showroom located at 1277 Hartford Ave., Johnston, RI 02919. You can also visit our website at: www.OPTXrhodeisland.com. Polarized sunglasses are a great way to protect your eyes while simply seeing better, crisper images through your eyewear. 1. Polarized lenses are made using a special and unique filter on lenses which creates horizontal openings for light. Only certain light rays that come in contact with your eyes horizontally can fit through those specific openings. Polarized lenses will block out the vertical light waves bouncing off of objects or scenery around you, especially areas of water and other cars passing by you on a sunny day. 2. Polarized sunglasses work because light will only travel through one direction in polarized sunnies, which in turn reduces and eliminates glare. Thus, maintaining and extending your overall eye health. 3. The images you see through a polarized pair of glasses or lenses can be a bit darker than your typical non-polarized sunglasses, but objects and details are also easier to see due to the clarity and crispness of the image through the treated lenses. 4. People who use polarized sunglasses in longer stretches of time claim they become less tired and don’t suffer from as many headaches, as compared to those who are constantly exposed to glares. They may even be a good option for you if you exposed through lots of sunlight from windows around you. 5. The biggest complaints people report with polarized sunglasses is seeing distorted images when looking at an LCD screen such as a cell phone, computer screen or the digital screens and on the dashboard within your car. 6. Blinding sun glare has been known to cause accidents, sometimes snow blindness and can even sunburn your eyes! Long term exposure to the sun’s glare is also linked to causing cataracts. 7. We love Ray Ban polarized glasses, as well as Oakley and Maui Jim, just to name a few! These are some of the most popular polarized glasses out on the market right now. 8. Be careful not to mistake UV protected sunglasses with polarized sunglasses! Just because a set of lenses may be darker than polarized lenses does not mean they offer the same protection for your eyes. 9. Dark sunglasses without any UV protection can actually damage your eyes more than not wearing sunglasses. Darker tints and treatments on lenses can cause our pupils to dilate. When they dilate behind lenses of no UV protection, you actually let more UV rays into your eye. 10. A great rule of thumb to go by: Polarized is best, UV protected is good, but no treatment on your lenses at all can cause damage beyond repair. Polarized sunglasses are an awesome addition to your wardrobe, especially when you are fishing, driving, or simply want sunglasses for UV and eye protection. Next time you visit your local eyewear store, be sure to consider purchasing polarized glasses! Feel free to contact us with any questions or if you are looking a great gift for your lover! 1. Roger Williams Park/Zoo Spring time is a beautiful time to live here in Rhode Island. We’re blessed to have many state and city parks around us. Def fave: Roger Williams located in Providence/Cranston. Not only is it a beautiful time to visit during the spring, but you can also feed ducks and swans, take part in some fun water based activities, and there is a zoo right in the park! It’s not a bad idea to even take a nice and scenic walk and jog throughout, or have yourself a peaceful picnic. http://www.rwpzoo.org/ 2. Mulligans Island Mini Golf Mini Golf is definitely a blast no matter what age you are. This is fun as a family outing, a social event with some friends or even a date night! We recommend going to Mulligan’s Island located in Cranston, where they offer some yummy food, batting cages, driving range, mini golf and even regular golf courses as well. We love coming here during the spring because the weather is just right and they close for wintertime. Get your inner athlete going at this fun location! http://www.mulligansisland.com/ 3. RISD Museum If you have a love for design or art, Rhode Island is a great place to be. Within our own city of Providence, you can experience beautiful architecture and design just from walking along some of our streets downtown and amongst the East Side. But if you want to see more, we always recommend the RISD museum. There are always amazing pieces and art on display. Plus, you can get a look at some the beautiful pieces our very own students in the state have produced. https://risdmuseum.org/ 4. Wicked Tulips Flower Farm Flowers are definitely a staple symbol of Spring-time. We all love seeing the color pop up and blossom around the state. One of the sweetest and most fun ways to experience flower picking is by going to the Tulips farm located in Johnston, R.I. It only comes around April-Late May and tickets sell out quick for the “U-Pick” events, so keep your eye on the weather and purchase them as soon as possible! A peaceful, spectacular and beautiful Rhode Island spring experience. https://wickedtulips.com/ 5. Donuts, donuts and more donuts! Not only are donuts delicious, but many of them are fun and colorful! What better way to get in a good mood than to purchase a colorful and yummy donut at some of our favorite shops across the state? We have oh-so-many favorite places to choose from! Some of these include Allie’s Donuts in North Kingstown (of course), 4 Corners Coffee in Warwick (where they have square donuts and also serve coffee and barbecue!) and Glaze’N’Daze in Johnston. Eat a donut and enjoy the weather! https://www.glazendazedonuts.com/ 6. Dining and Strolling on Main Street in East Greenwich We like to think of Main Street as a “mini” Providence or Boston. Although it’s only a few miles of spanning area, it’s filled with some of the best restaurants, cafes, shops, boutiques and marinas. The hustle and bustle only picks up during the spring time on Main Street and it’s definitely worth a visit! There is also a theater, the Greenwich Odeum, where you can watch various concerts, shows and performing arts. Some of the most popular places on Main Street include Blu on the Water, T’s, La Masseria restaurant, Grille on Main, Jiggers and more! http://www.mainstreeteastgreenwich.com/dining/ 7. R1 Indoor Karting You know what they say… April showers bring May flowers. On a rainy spring afternoon, what better way to get your heart pumping than with a little indoor racing on one of the newest indoor tracks in New England? R1 is great for kids and adults, as well as for events! There’s also a sports bar and restaurant in there as well to make it the perfect rainy day outing for all ages. https://r1indoorkarting.com/ 9. East Bay Bike Path Enjoying time outside is many peoples favorite thing to do as soon as the weather starts warming up. Biking is not only healthy, but it’s relaxing! One of the most popular bike paths here in Rhode Island is the East Bay Bike Path, which lets you bike a whopping 15 miles! It extends all the way from India Point Park in Providence to Independence Park in Bristol. This path is particularly relaxing because it’s mainly flat, other than a few small hills here and there. http://www.dot.ri.gov/community/bikeri/eastbay.php 10. Raffa Yoga Something many of us are bad at is relaxing - not just our bodies, but our minds too. Spring can still be stressful for a number of people, even with the birds chirping, flowers blooming and trees regaining color. A great way to eliminate or help control that stress is through exercise. One of our favorites is YOGA! With awesome reviews and a calming environment, Raffa in Cranston is a great place to go for one of the best yoga experiences around. Did we mention they also do the Anti-Gravity yoga? Talk about fun! http://raffayoga.com/yoga/home/ Feel free to contact us with any questions or if you are looking a great gift for your lover! Chanel sunglasses? Oakley sunglasses? Oh no! Your favorite pair of eyeglasses is not functioning quite up to par. What do you do? Well, we definitely don’t suggest tossing out any glasses that need repairing. Many ophthalmic eyewear as well as sunglasses can actually be fixed quite easily at home or with a quick trip to an optician nearby.
First and foremost, there are a few things that can typically go wrong with your glasses. We can give you some insight on what may be wrong with them, what you need or where you may have to go in order to have that eyewear happily back on your face!
*(Be cautious of your warranty and what is or is not covered if you attempt to fix anything yourself.)
• Bent or Broken Temple (AKA, the arm) – If one, or both, of your eyewear temples are bent, they can easily be bent back into shape by an optician with a special high tech heat device which can easily allow the repairer to bend the arm back into its correct shape. Although we do not always suggest trying things at home, if you feel you can get the job done without breaking it any further, we suggest aiming a hair dryer a few feet away from the arm and very slightly bending the arm back into the proper position. Be extremely careful as the metal and even the plastic may get hot!!!
If the arm/temple is completely broken, it is best not to glue pieces together. You are much safer and better off going to your local eyewear retailer and seeing if a replacement part is covered under warranty, or ordering a new piece altogether.
• Too Loose/Too Tight on the Face – This too is quite an easy fix. It is actually normal to have daily “wear and tear” on your eyeglasses. If you are constantly taking your glasses on and off your face, or letting them rest on the top of your head, this can stretch out the glasses and loosen them up. It is easier to fix glasses that are too loose rather than too tight. If your glasses suddenly become too tight, make sure they have not been altered or broken accidentally. Too tight of a frame may also be a sign that the frame sizing is too small for your face, or the shape is not right for your facial structure or size. An optician can heat and bend your frame into the desired tightness (or loosen) at your local eyeglass retailer.
• Lost/Loose screw – Many of us do not have the typical tools and knowledge needed to repair screws and other small parts on eyewear. The screws used in each pair of glasses can truly vary in terms of depth and size. It is best to go to your local optician or contact the place of purchase in order to determine what is needed. Although the repair process is usually quick, we do not suggest attempting yourself as using the wrong screw can permanently damage your frame or scratch up your lenses in the process. At OPTX Rhode Island, we pride ourselves on walk-in repairs. If you have any questions about a loose or lost screw, feel free to see any of our opticians Monday-Saturday.
• Broken/Missing Nose Piece(s) – This too is actually a quick and easy repair, granted the nose pad housing has not been broken or altered as well. Not having a nose piece on your glasses can damage the skin on your nose and be pretty uncomfortable for a daily wearer. Although many nose pads can be swapped and different sizes can be used, be mindful that certain designers have housing and spacing made specifically for their own parts. Always consult with an optician or your local eyewear shop when replacing nose pieces.
• Scratched Lenses – Shoot! Another scratch appeared on your once perfect lenses. Many people struggle with scratches on their lenses on a daily basis. Sometimes the glasses slip out of your hands, are not stored properly or do not have a special outer coating to help prevent deep scratches. There are some tips and tricks clients can try at home before making the trip to your local eyewear shop. We always suggest using a cotton or a microfiber cloth for this process. The first step would be to lightly wash your eyewear with some mild dish soap. If the scratches are still there you can try taking petroleum jelly, non-abrasive toothpaste, or special scratch removing paste (usually found online). Rub the product into the lenses lightly with circular motions with one of the above cloths. Rinse, dry and repeat if necessary! If all else fails, it may be time to consider new lenses. (Or maybe new glasses, because one can never have too many! )
• Dirty/Worn Out Frame – This process can also be done at home. It is quite amazing what a good and thorough cleaning to your eyewear can do. Not only are you washing away build up and bacteria, but you are also prolonging the life of your eyeglasses! We suggest warm water with a mild dish soap as well. Always be sure to dry with a soft cloth. Make sure your glasses can handle the washing process, as some frames are delicate or have special care instructions. Another quick tip is taking a cotton ball soaked with some alcohol and carefully, lightly, rubbing the frame and lenses. Bonus is that this works as a disinfectant as well! Do not over apply any cleaning products on your eyewear, as this too can damage the coating on the frame and more. Always follow manufacturer/ seller directions as some acetate (plastic) frames cannot tolerate alcohol or other cleaning agents. Soap and water is usually the best bet, except for fabric or leather frames, which should probably never be wet or washed.
• Twisted/Crooked eyewear – This can be a sad moment for someone who really loves their eyewear. A twisted or extremely crooked frame can sometimes be irreversible. But, have no fear! Local opticians are trained to work with heavily damaged eyewear and repair processes. With special high tech equipment in-house, OPTX opticians are able to get some extremely bent and twisted glasses fixed in a quick walk-in visit for most patients and clients. Unfortunately if the frame has snapped, we never suggest gluing. In most cases, an optician will do all they can before they suggest ordering a new frame.
At OPTX Rhode Island, we truly pride ourselves on repairing and accommodating all of our customers’ needs. We happily accept walk-ins for consultations and repairs as well, even if you are not a local customer or did not purchase the eyewear from us. It’s quite amazing what can be done in such a short amount of time with the right knowledge, tools and high-tech equipment. Please visit our showroom at our flagship store in Johnston, R.I, and speak to an optician yourself! We are also available via telephone (401-521-OPTX) and ready to assist in any way we can with your eyeglass repairs and eyewear needs!

Alright ladies, we know what your go-to dress is in your closet and within your wardrobe. It's every girl's go-to dress. You know which one we are talking about:
That little black dress, AKA your LBD. We all have our favorite one, or a few, that just happen to work for a variety of occasions. Whether you're strolling around town with your girls, attending a wedding (be happy you aren't a bridesmaid and have to wear that hideous dress the others are sulking in), or just flat our partying - your Little Black Dress sure comes in handy.
Although you may accessorize your LBD with some fashion jewelry, your new designer handbag or some sexy pumps, the outfit isn't complete without the perfect pair of sunglasses to go along with your dress.
We have some great suggestions!
There are a few options that stand out from the rest when it comes to pairing up some sunnies with a little black dress.
If you're sticking to a less extravagant, more laid back, dressy yet elegant option for a little black dress, we always recommend choosing a nice oversized black acetate frame to compliment the simplicity of a casual and chic look. Think "Audrey Hepburn-esque" in Breakfast At Tiffany's.
If your dress happens to be more casual "brunch" material or even a day out with the girls, we highly recommend an eye-catching cat eye (or as we like to call them, sexy kitty sunnies). A cat eye shape can really help dress up an outfit with just the slightest flick and flare. Your girlfriends will be swooning over your outfit and the cat eye will give you just enough mysterious charm that hot strangers may want to chat with you!
Lastly, if you're going for some glam and have a high-end event to attend or a cocktail party, maybe even a date, we know what kind of eyewear you need. Assuming your little black dress is more styled for the party, we love to pair ours with sunnies that are glittering, foxy and fancy! Check out Taylor Swift's new music video, Look What You Made Me Do, for some high end, extra fancy Gucci sunglass inspiration!
Whatever you choose, wear it, own it and make it yours. Remember as the saying goes, fashion fades but style is forever. Always choose pieces, whether clothing or accessories, that will stand the test of time. But yes, every once in a while it's okay to splurge on something wild or unusual that just calls your name.

Summer is in full swing! Looking for a few things to do while you enjoy the sun and high temperatures in the Ocean State? Look no further! We've got the wrap up right here for you:
10. Eat Lobsters! Or as we like to call them locally ... "lobstahs"
There are many great places to do this, but we prefer to do it on the water and with a view. Our fave place? George's of Galilee (http://georgesofgalilee.com ) With an extensive menu of seafood favorites you can't go wrong. Everything is freshly made and service is quick and courteous if dining in, organized and easy if using their takeout window. Insider's tip: get takeout at their beach level window and then have a beach picnic just steps away. Parking is free in the immediate lot, and plenty of paid parking available nearby.
