At the OPTX RI, scleral contact lenses are among our top specialties.

For conditions ranging from dry eye syndrome and chemical burns to Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and corneal transplant recovery, scleral lenses can help achieve both comfort and vision improvement while few other treatments can.

However, while scleral lenses are among our go-to tools for vision correction—and while many of our existing patients praise the results they provide—we have found that many new patients in RI are not familiar with what scleral lenses even are.

Have you been told that you aren’t a good candidate for contact lenses because of the shape of your cornea or because your eyes are too dry? It can be disappointing to learn that you won’t be able to wear contacts for vision correction. However, you might consider talking with another Optometrist for a second opinion. Scleral lenses are a great option that might work for your eyes.

What are Scleral Lenses?

These contact lenses are designed with a larger diameter. They are gas permeable lenses that cover the entire surface of the cornea. Because of the design of the lenses, they rest on the sclera of the eye, which is the white area around the iris and allows for improved comfort.
The benefit of this design is that the scleral lenses can create a smooth optical surface, even when you have an irregular cornea. This smooth surface is an effective way to correct vision issues related to eye diseases such as keratoconus, as well as other corneal irregularities.

BENEFITS OF SCLERAL LENSES

When compared to other types of contact lenses, there are several advantages to using scleral lenses. It is always best to talk with an experienced Optometrist to get recommendations for your individual situation.
If your eye doctor tells you that scleral lenses are right for you, some of the benefits that you can expect are:
• Improved durability
• Reduced risk of complications
• Easier to use
• Better vision

Since the scleral lenses are bigger in size, many people find that the lenses stay on the eye better. You don’t need to worry about the contact lens accidentally falling out of the eye. Since they are more stable within the eye, these contact lenses offer better comfort compared to other options.
Do you have irregularly shaped corneas, dry eyes, or sensitive eyes?

Talk with us about the benefits of scleral contact lenses for your vision correction. Many patients with hard-to-fit eyes have experienced great success by using scleral lenses.

To understand how scleral lenses work and why they are so beneficial, let’s look at their use to treat a specific condition. Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea thins and bulges outward.

If you have keratoconus, the condition will cause your cornea to lose its usual round shape, instead of developing into a more cone-like shape. This cone shape causes the light to irregularly enter the eye, making it difficult for it to focus correctly on the retina.

The ultimate result of keratoconus is distorted vision, ultimately to the point where the eye can no longer focus properly without the aid of eyeglasses or contact lenses.

The problem with using contact lenses to correct keratoconus is the way the condition changes the shape of your cornea.

It is challenging to fit standard contact lenses to match the cone-shaped bulge that keratoconus creates. Furthermore, since keratoconus patients often experience ongoing changes to the shape of the cornea, there is no guarantee that a contact lens will still fit in a month or several months.

HOW SCLERAL LENSES WORK?

Scleral lenses are effective for correcting vision in persons with keratoconus because they do not require the close surface-matching fit of standard contact lenses.

In fact, scleral lenses do not sit on the corneal surface at all. Instead, they sit on the white of the eye—known more technically as the sclera—and then vault over the entire cornea. This vault, chamber, or reservoir is filled with a pure, preservative-free saline solution, which serves two basic functions:

1) to keep the eye hydrated and healthy, and
2) to compensate for any irregularities in the shape of the corneal surface.

For a condition like keratoconus, which impairs vision because of irregularities in corneal shape, scleral lenses are extremely beneficial.

Not only can these lenses allow a keratoconus patient to see clearly without the need for glasses, but they are also more comfortable than standard contact lenses.
Some patients hate contact lenses because they dislike the sensation of having something sitting on their corneas. Scleral lenses solve this problem.
Obviously, these benefits extend to conditions other than keratoconus, from other problems with a blurry or distorted vision to recovery from eye injuries or surgeries.
For patients in the latter situation, the protective and hydrating characteristics of scleral lens design are excellent for keeping the ocular surface safe and fostering faster healing.

Candidates for Scleral LensesThe following eye conditions can be treated with scleral lenses:
• Keratoconus
• Corneal Graft (Post-Keratoplasty)
• Post-Lasik Ectasia
• Post-RK (Radial Keratotomy Refractive Surgery)
• High Myopia and Astigmatism
• Dry Eye Syndrome
• Sjogren’s Syndrome
• Graft Versus Host Disease

Let Us Find You The Right Sunglasses Or Eye wear for you.

Six Things to Consider Everyone knows sunglasses make it easier to see on a sunny day, whether out on the road or the water. However, wearing the right sunglasses is also a great defense against ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause short- and long-term eye damage, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. These are the most important factors to consider when purchasing sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun: 1. Make it 100 percent. Women in sunglasses The single most important thing to look for when buying sunglasses to protect your eyes is a sticker or tag indicating that they block 100 percent of UV rays. However, fewer than half of people buying sunglasses bother to check whether the lenses protect the eyes from ultraviolet light, according to the Academy's 2014 national sun safety survey. 2. Bigger is better. Young woman in oversize glasses The more coverage from sunglasses, the less sun damage inflicted on the eyes. Consider buying oversized glasses or wraparound-style glasses, which help cut down on UV entering the eye from the side. 3. Darker lenses don't protect better. Sunglasses on the beach While very dark lenses may look cool, they do not necessarily block more UV rays. 4. Color doesn't matter. Lady in pink sunglasses Some sunglasses come with amber, green or gray lenses. They do not block more sun but can increase contrast, which may be useful for athletes who play sports such as baseball or golf. 5. Polarized lenses cut glare, not UV. Couple driving in sunglasses Polarization reduces glare coming off reflective surfaces like water or pavement. This does not offer more protection from the sun, but can make activities like driving or being on the water safer or more enjoyable. 6. Cost shouldn't be a factor. Piggy bank on the beach with sunglasses Sunglasses don't have to cost a lot of money to work well. Less expensive pairs marked as 100 percent UV-blocking can be just as effective as pricier options.
